THE VIRGINIA STATE UNIVERSITY ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT

Dr. Gymama Slaughter and her research team focus on improving the diagnosis and treatment of diabetic patients and combat soldiers. Recent medical device innovations include glucose & lactate biosensors, E. Coli biosensors, the smart biopatch, and plant nutrient uptake via supraparamagnetic nanoparticles. We are now working on three major areas of reseach.

  • Biomedical Studies: neurogenomics to understand memory and learning processes (gene expression monitoring during memory formation and learning process) and molecular foundation of diseases using molecular aptamers

  • Bionanotechnology: understanding and making use of biological phenomena on the nanometer scale; making new tools and materials for enhanced biomedical studies using nanotechnology and nanomaterials

  • Molecular Engineering: engineer molecules and synthesizing novel molecular probes for bioanalysis, biosensors, biotechnological and biomedical application
