VSU offers numerous outreach programs designed to advance science education in our community. The role of the Center for Biosystems and Engineering is to support these efforts in ways which relate directly to the core strengths of the Department of Engineering & Technology and maximize the investment citizens have made in VSU and the Department of Engineering & Technology.

The Center for Biosystems and Engineering participates in events such as the annual Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE), Women in Engineering Day (WiED), and Keys to Empower Youths (KEYS) event, which brings k-12 students from around the state to VSU to participate in a hands-on learning adventure designed to peak their interest in many different educational subjects from science, technology, engineering, and math to arts and culture.

The Center consults with local school districts interested in developing or strengthening their engineering and biotech curriculum. We provide tours to science teachers to introduce them to the concept of integrated science, our research projects, and the latest in laboratory design.

The Center for Biosystems and Engineering High School Internship Program encourages high school students ages 16 and older to pursue careers in science by providing hands-on experience in biotechnology research. If you would like more information about our outreach activities, please call 804-524-8989 Ext 1127.

While the Center for Biosystems and Engineering is a working research Center without formal classrooms, it serves a vital function in the education of many VSU students. The Center engages more student researchers than any other VSU entity.

The Center for Biosystems and Engineering at Virginia State University (VSU) offers tours for groups with an interest in our research. Please contact us if you are interested in a tour.

Education Outreach Program

CBE scientists and education staff are dedicated to improving access to science for diverse groups and to building a competent work force of scientists and engineers. Our education programs provide undergraduate research opportunities, graduate student training, outreach to K-12 students and teachers, and community outreach.
