Senior Designs

SENIOR DESIGNS EXPO

The VSU Department of Engineering and Technology, Computer Engineering Senior Design Project is devised to engage senior engineering students in the design process of solving real engineering problems through teamwork. The Senior Design Project consists of a 1-credit seminar, CPEG-400 (Fall), and a three-credit senior design course, CPEG-408 (Spring). The senior design sections give students time to work together on their projects and meet with their faculty advisors. Besides engineering students, teams may have members from the VSU School of Business or from the VSU School of Liberal Art and Education if the design problem requires these skills. All problems must have a significant design component, must require knowledge from the students' disciplines to complete, and usually require actually building or fabricating a device, experimental apparatus, system, etc. Projects for the Senior Design Project must be approved by an advisor and by the Senior Design Project Coordinator. The criteria for approval are described in the Project Guidelines document.

Submitting Projects for Pre-Approval

All projects must be submitted through VSU Engineering faculty and are pre-approved to satisfy the senior design requirements. Students are also encouraged to find projects with their employers or other industry contacts, create their own projects, or participate in projects sponsored by other departments.
Suggestions for projects from faculty, students or industry representatives are welcomed, particularly if they include funding. Please submit suggestions to Drs. Singli Garcia-Otero and Gymama Slaughter using the Project Guidelines document as a guide for content and submit your Project Approval Form.

Advisors

Project advisors must be Department of Engineering faculty, but teams are encouraged to work with industry collaborators and faculty from other VSU schools. Advisors are expected to meet with their teams at least one hour bi-weekly. The Advisor Guidelines discusses all the expectations of advisors, including project deliverables, deadlines and suggested grade weightings.

Students

Computer engineering seniors in the VSU Department of Engineering must enroll in the one-credit Senior Seminar, CPEG 400 (Fall) . All senior students must also enroll in a Senior Design section, CPEG 408. Students: please see your faculty advisor, program coordinator, or your program's Senior Project Coordinator if you have further questions.

Project teams are typically be limited to two - four members and advisors may select a team from among the students who express interest. The advisor, however, must know of your interest, and popular project teams may fill up fast.

If you do not intend to work on one of the projects provided to you (e.g., you may want to pursue a personal interest, or you may have arranged to work on a project with an industry sponsor), please make advance arrangements with your prospective team members and a faculty advisor. You are also strongly encouraged to submit a preliminary Project Approval Form to your Senior Design Project Coordinator as soon as possible to make sure it will be approved.
